nice -n 20 blogging

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

The strange thing about blogging is that the more busy and interesting your life gets and the more you have topics to blog on, the less time you have for blogging. Well, that’s my rather obvious excuse.

So what have I been so busy doing, exactly? Let’s think… I was going to write about the brewery tour at the Rebellion Brewery I went on with Mark but I can’t remember that much about it. Funny.

And then the DIY season started; it seems to be that October and November are when the weather turns and we find time to do all the home improvements we’ve been planning for the last nine months. We’re now about 80% complete on the laminate flooring project and next comes the whole kitchen re-fit. I’m planning to take a couple of days off. Expect another long break in the blogging while that’s on.

Oh! And the music! I’ve been listening to Supernature by Goldfrapp and The Garden by Zero 7. Both third albums and both really good; far better that I was expecting. Good in the wake up humming the tunes and have them featuring in your dreams kind of way. Perhaps more on that later.

Disaurning Ernience

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

We received a mysterious package yesterday, which turned out to be a limited edition CD entitled “Disaurning Ernience”. The postmark was Wallingford, so I knew I had Ed to blame.

Putting it on while the family sat down to dinner was something of a timewarp to 1994, where remembering the way to the pub was the closest thing I had to responsibility and drinking and listening to live music with friends was what Sunday evenings were made for.

Sitting in her highchair, Jessica started to dance spontaneously to Ain’t No Sunshine with a big grin on her face — she’s about ten times more dancy than Ben. Lady Madonna got the same treatment. Girl’s got taste, it would appear.

Good times… Thanks Ed!

Aha Shake Heartbreak

Monday, August 7th, 2006

At Tim’s suggestion Louise bought me the Kings of Leon album Aha Shake Heartbreak a couple of weeks ago. I’d listened to it a couple of times but tonight while I was racking up some overtime at home — paid, yes, I’m too mercenary for anything else — I put it on repeat. I think it’s safe to say that it’s growing on me quickly. Yes, Tim, I’ll be upgrading my opinion on them from the damning-with-faint-praise-y “they’re alright”.

Red Hot Chili Peppers at Reading

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006

Apologies for the long gap in posts but this last week has been rather manic, the reason for which I may post about later.

Anyways, I had the afternoon off work yesterday because Jayne, Larry, Louise and I went to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers play at the Madjeski Stadium in Reading. It was probably the hottest day of the summer so far but the atmosphere in the crowd was really good — until it came to the massive traffic jams getting out of the car park at the end; I can’t be bothered to relate the episode in detail, suffice as to say we won and maintained the moral high ground.

Inside the stadium was fairly shadey, so the long wait turned out to be far more pleasant than we were expecting. We met up with Mark, Simon, Tim, Kathy, Fiona, James and Ruth, then later I bumped into Frank and Al from work; it felt like most of Reading had turned up!

The band sounded fantastic and the set built well until almost the entire stadium floor was dancing along. The time passed all too quickly, the mark of a great gig in my mind.

The Coopers at Reading University

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

The Coopers’ gig at Reading University was a blast! The important leason: Standing six feet in front of speakers that are taller you will probably lead to your ears still ringing 24 hours later.

But back to the gig… We got there in time to see the second support band, Metric, who totally rocked! It’s rare to see a live band who totally catch your attention the first time you see them.

The light was finally fading in the windows when The Coopers took to the stage to loud applause. By this time the venue was full but not to capacity, so it wasn’t unpleasant.

The band had a rough start after a technical glitch halted their set two songs in but Ben covered well with an impromptu, stripped-down, jazzed-up version of Who Needs Enemies that had the audience singing along — until he admitted forgetting the words. The crowd took it well, though and it all added to a good atmosphere.

With the glitch fixed they stormed through a set that contained many new tracks from the forthcoming album, sprinkled with old crowd-pleasers like Blind Pilots and (my favourite from the second album) New Toys. I’ve never been as far forward at one of the gigs before and the intensity coming off stage was amazing. Amazing too was the way they kept swapping tasks; I counted at least three lead vocalists and as many bass players during the set.

The closing number was a slow-building rework of Panzer Attack that doubled the overall mosh level in the crowd. There were boos aplenty when it became clear there wouldn’t be an encore.

Definitely worth the price of admittance. And the ringing ears.

The Cooper Temple Clause release a new single (updated)

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

The Coopers have released a new single, Damage, which you can download free of charge. (Hmmm… I’m all about the “free of charge” today, am I not?)
This new track was still in my mind from from their Oxford Zodiac gig and it’s survived well the transition from live to studio. It’s much less self indulgent than their previous work; I genuinely hope it helps them pull in a wider audience. Go on, take a listen…

Update: I should probably mention that the band are touring at the moment and will play Reading University on Sunday. We’ll be trying to go along if we can organise child care.

LCD Soundsystem

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

When I was at Ed’s stag weekend earlier in the year, Tim was horrified to find out that I wasn’t into Kings Of Leon in a big way. I was reminded of this just now while listening to LCD Soundsystem; the track Give It Up reminded my of them, in a dance-punk find of way. So Tim, I think you should check out that album. It’s certainly patchy, but when it’s good, it’s proper good.

Sony Copy Protection Evilness

Friday, November 18th, 2005

I [sent my Road To Rouen CD back](/weblog/2005/10/08/supergrass-at-the-hexagon/) and got a full refund. This was the first [Copy Control](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copy_Control) CD that I failed to circumvent, but having read [Bruce Schneier's article](http://www.wired.com/news/privacy/0,1848,69601,00.html) — [via Wil](http://wilwheaton.typepad.com/wwdnbackup/2005/11/schneier_on_son.html) — on the [Sony rootkit evilness](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Sony_CD_copy_protection_controversy), I will in future refuse to purchase any “CD” containing this sort of “technology”. I hope you will too. It makes me sad they consider us all criminals and worse, stoop to criminal acts themselves to try and police us.
