Activities non-productive

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Pretty quiet round these parts, eh? This has mostly been due to me wasting huge amounts of time playing Arcanum (something I last did a few years ago) to get some sort of RPG fix after my recent D&D revelation. This time I’m playing a couple of different characters in parallel, including a thief, which is turning out to be more enjoyable than I expected, as well as showing an entirely different facet of the game.

This post is brought to you, again, by the D&D podcast. Today I went back to the first Penny Arcade / PvP podcast. This is a really good introduction to the world of D&D as it features some new players learning to play the game for the first time, having never rolled a D20 in their lives. For veteran players this also has some commentary by the DM on the changes present in 4E.

Now, if anyone out there is interested in giving this D&D lark a go, please let me know!

Dungeons and/or dragons

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Recently I’ve been listening to a podcast and reading a series of blog posts on Dungeons and Dragons, or D&D as we like to call it in the business. Back in The Day, when I played games like these, I was much more into 40K and Car Wars, and less into the role playing side of things. But the posts and podcasts have made me remember how much I enjoyed dice-based, tabletop gaming and I’d really like to give D&D a try, either as a player or as a DM.

When I was younger and actually playing these games, I always preferred to run them, be the GM. I guess that way I could never suffer the lows of losing but the flip side was I never got the highs of winning. So, part of me would love to be just a player now, but if I have to run things myself to make it happen, that’s fine too. I dreamed of becoming a proper DM. Maybe I’ll get there, albeit 20 years late.

I also think this would be something awesome to get Ben and Jessica into, something fun for us to share. Clearly they’re years away from it currently but the years tick past quickly enough, so perhaps I should start preparing now.

Games for boys (or XYZZY FTW)

If you ever played Command & Conquer back in the day and are looking for a passing distraction you could do worse than trying out Crystalien Conflict. It’s a great little RTS on the Lego web site, which Ben and I have been playing together recently.

Things have certainly come a long way from when I played Adventure with my dad, loaded from tape on a home-made Acorn Atom. I remember this experience vividly and how much fun I had as we mapped our way through the maze of twisty passages by leaving our possessions behind in a trail, Hansel and Gretel fashion.

For this reason I’m taking my time with Ben and making sure we get through the game. The adventure I had with my dad was never completed because we got stuck, much to my disappointment.

At this point it’s traditional to make curmudgeonly grumblings about there being nothing wrong with simpler, traditional games that don’t require a computer. Well, I don’t agree but I’ll make this observation: Just yesterday Ben was played Draughts with me (and others) on a real board in the real world. He got just as excited and involved as with anything on the computer.

I think what you’re playing is not so important. As long as it catches their imagination and is fun for both of you then you’re winning. If I can get Ben thinking stategy, be that why jumping an opponent’s piece isn’t always your best move or why defending your Crystal Harvester is so important, then I’m happy.

Addiction

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

A couple of weeks back I was looking through the plethora of free games available for Ubuntu, trying to find something casual for Louise to play. I stumbled across Gweled, a free clone of Bejeweled. This is a simple game, about as difficult as Tetris to play and with similar levels of addictability. Louise and I are both hooked.

Gweled comes with a rather cool Daft Punk-esque sound track that seems to will you on towards higher scores. It’s just not the same game with the sound turned off. This evening, as I got back from badminton (having put in a solid 20 minutes of Gweled before I left) I heard the familiar bass line coming from the dining room. “Yes, I’m playing.” came the admission. There’s no need to qualify the statement any more, we’re that far gone.

Game over

I’ve been playing Arcanum for about six months and I’ve just completed it. It turned into a bit of a slog at the end but over all it was a well plotted RPG. I’d have to agree with other reviewers that the mechanism for travelling about became very repetative towards the end.

I haven’t completed many games in my life, so I thought I’d mark the occasion here. Thank you for your attention.

Killer Queen

This weekend at Abi’s birthday barbecue, thanks to Adam, I finally got to experience Guitar Hero. Wow! What a fun game! I haven’t had that much fun since I mastered Gran Tourismo. The best thing is when you forget about the controller and you’re just absorbed by the game. With GT that took weeks or maybe months of play but the amazing thing with Guitar Hero was it happened on my first go!

If Ben was just a couple of years older I’d have the perfect excuse…
