nice -n 20 blogging

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

The strange thing about blogging is that the more busy and interesting your life gets and the more you have topics to blog on, the less time you have for blogging. Well, that’s my rather obvious excuse.

So what have I been so busy doing, exactly? Let’s think… I was going to write about the brewery tour at the Rebellion Brewery I went on with Mark but I can’t remember that much about it. Funny.

And then the DIY season started; it seems to be that October and November are when the weather turns and we find time to do all the home improvements we’ve been planning for the last nine months. We’re now about 80% complete on the laminate flooring project and next comes the whole kitchen re-fit. I’m planning to take a couple of days off. Expect another long break in the blogging while that’s on.

Oh! And the music! I’ve been listening to Supernature by Goldfrapp and The Garden by Zero 7. Both third albums and both really good; far better that I was expecting. Good in the wake up humming the tunes and have them featuring in your dreams kind of way. Perhaps more on that later.

Disaurning Ernience

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

We received a mysterious package yesterday, which turned out to be a limited edition CD entitled “Disaurning Ernience”. The postmark was Wallingford, so I knew I had Ed to blame.

Putting it on while the family sat down to dinner was something of a timewarp to 1994, where remembering the way to the pub was the closest thing I had to responsibility and drinking and listening to live music with friends was what Sunday evenings were made for.

Sitting in her highchair, Jessica started to dance spontaneously to Ain’t No Sunshine with a big grin on her face — she’s about ten times more dancy than Ben. Lady Madonna got the same treatment. Girl’s got taste, it would appear.

Good times… Thanks Ed!

Indy 345

Last year’s Ringathon was great fun, so this year I’d like to do something similar to celebrate my birthday. After due thought and consideration, I think a marathon Indiana Jones watching is in order. As “Indyathon” just doesn’t cut it as a name, I’m going to call it the “Indy 345″. Answers on a postcard.

I can’t believe Raiders is 25 years old this year!

Suit me up, suit me down

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

I have to say that I’m slightly surprised at Tim’s decision not to go with morning suits for his wedding. I’m not saying it’s bad — it’s exactly the same decision I came to for our wedding — but every time I go to a wedding where morning suits are on parade, there’s a bit of me that wishes I’d not passed on the chance to dress up. I guess Tim had his go when he was ushing at Richard and Becky’s wedding.

They’ve had a late winter, but it’s finally started snowing in New York

The whole family went to Tim & Kathy’s engagement party this weekend and we all had a great time. The kids were well behaved and there were quite a few folks there who we hadn’t seen in some time. In the evening Louise held the fort and I went back. I was then party to an impromptu whiskey tasting lesson. Mmmm! Must get me one of those whiskey guide books.

Every time I meet up with old friends I end up reflecting on my current situation, due to the standard “so what are you up to?” questions that crop up. I had to laugh (somewhat explosively, sorry) when Dave put a twist on it saying, “so I suppose you’re in a management position now…?”. Yeah, right… err… no.

Compared to some other friends, in many visible ways, the progress of my professional life has turned to molasses. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a challenging job that’s paid relatively well and I have learnt, well, everything I know about (stupidly) large scale software development while there. But… I’m still doing much the same job with the same responsibilities I was doing 5 years ago when I started at the company. Worse, my raw technical skills have not moved on at all.

Of course, having a steady job with good hours has suited me very well since Ben and Jess turned up. I don’t think I want to commit to doing more work, so perhaps I should just shut up and get on with my comfortable suburban family life. But… again with the but… it doesn’t stop me from feeling a bit left behind. Like being the last one to be picked for the football team at school (but that’s a whole other post).

Now, this is not some revelation I’ve had over the weekend. Much of the past year I’ve been broadening my knowledge and I’ve just started re-tooling my brain with a 1000 page book on C# and .NET. I’m not having a whinge here; I’m more the “so how do we fix this?” kind of guy. So, what am I saying? I don’t know, this is a blog goddamit! I don’t need to know anything!

Okay, I do know. Oh Magic Internet, please conjure up a job that pays more with lower hours. There, I said it, come mock me, arseholes.

Navel gazing aside, the party was great. I got to catch up with folks and started to have an interesting coversation with Tim on environmentalism. I was getting tired, though, and sort of petered out and couldn’t argue my (slightly confused) side, especially when posited with hard questions like “why does it matter if species die out due to climate change?”. Species aside, I would direct people to a post by Gervase Markam on carbon offsetting. Or not, the link is down at the time of writing. Interesting are his rebuttals to the comments; some of the links I will have to follow. (Whoops, almost slipped into Yodaspeak there.)

Killer Queen

This weekend at Abi’s birthday barbecue, thanks to Adam, I finally got to experience Guitar Hero. Wow! What a fun game! I haven’t had that much fun since I mastered Gran Tourismo. The best thing is when you forget about the controller and you’re just absorbed by the game. With GT that took weeks or maybe months of play but the amazing thing with Guitar Hero was it happened on my first go!

If Ben was just a couple of years older I’d have the perfect excuse…

Welcome to the Blogosphere, Tim!

Wednesday, July 5th, 2006

So after much nagging Tim has finally got his arse in gear and joined the Blogosphere — yay!

This means that one of my goals for 2006 is complete. Given that we’re approximately half way through the year it’s probably time for a quick review of progress. Close FFL: Done. Finish decorating lounge: Pending a trip to Ikea. Decorate another room: Planning changes to the kitchen. House paintwork: Pending replacement of some window panes. Tame garden: Done. Fix rust on car: Not done. Blog more: Done, I think. Invent TBMMPORPGITWE: I think I’m going to pass on this. Teach Ben to throw and catch: Slow progress. Improve carbon neutrality: Done some basic research. Run more: Failing miserably.

Red Hot Chili Peppers at Reading

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006

Apologies for the long gap in posts but this last week has been rather manic, the reason for which I may post about later.

Anyways, I had the afternoon off work yesterday because Jayne, Larry, Louise and I went to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers play at the Madjeski Stadium in Reading. It was probably the hottest day of the summer so far but the atmosphere in the crowd was really good — until it came to the massive traffic jams getting out of the car park at the end; I can’t be bothered to relate the episode in detail, suffice as to say we won and maintained the moral high ground.

Inside the stadium was fairly shadey, so the long wait turned out to be far more pleasant than we were expecting. We met up with Mark, Simon, Tim, Kathy, Fiona, James and Ruth, then later I bumped into Frank and Al from work; it felt like most of Reading had turned up!

The band sounded fantastic and the set built well until almost the entire stadium floor was dancing along. The time passed all too quickly, the mark of a great gig in my mind.

Conversational links

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

Over the last couple of weeks Louise and I have been out (minus the children) a lot more than usual: Jayne’s housewarming party, the Coopers gig, the FFL wake, and James’ thirtieth birthday party in Oxford. At each of these I’ve inevitably ended up mentioning some web site or other, so now I’ve got a few random links to disseminate.

First up, Chuck Norris Facts. I was sent this link by a colleague and it made me laugh out loud. A couple of pints down at the FFL wake and it had me in tears; I was unable to get through Chuck’s Favourite number 11 without creasing up. It’s the funniest thing I’ve seen on teh internets since Fatmouse.

I introduced Dave Estall to the concept of the LazyWeb. I may have just blown his mind. Or maybe it was the beer that did that.

Hmmm… That seems to be all. I thought there were more. Oh well, enjoy!

We blog

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

So, Tim is thinking about starting a blog. Cool! Go for it!

My suggestion for anyone wanting to start a blog would be to head over to wordpress.com where they’ll host your blog free of charge. If you’re looking for a little more independence, they also have pointers there to other ISPs who will host a WordPress powered blog for you. Of course if you want to pay me, I’ll even set one up for you complete with your own domain name!
