Insert clever title here re: Facebook

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

I was perusing Facebook the other day, as you do, when I came across a link to James’ blog. Cool! I’m always happy to see friends start blogging, particularly when I don’t get to see them very often. James had a bit of a slow start so I’m hoping if I mention him here it will encourage him to continue.

I’m on the fence about Facebook “friending” of folks I went to junior school with. Of course I’m interested to see what they’re up to now, that’s only natural, but I don’t think I need to keep tabs on them that much. I mean, I’ve wasted more than enough time on that site already and I’ve specifically stayed away from all the Pirates and Zombies and Vampires malarkey. Call me miserable if you like, I’m just trying to use my time wisely; I’m not very good at that as it stands.

And what’s with all this “wall” business? That’s got to be the most ass-backwards form of communication yet invented. Clearly I’m just too old to “get” it. Oh well, I am a dad after all, I suppose I can’t feel too bad about it, it’s my role in life.

The turn of the screw

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Ever feel you’re losing the battle against entropy and chaos? Well, it’s certainly feeling that way around here at the moment. My boss is on leave at work, right when an important client is making a tricky hardware transition, leaving me to do the tidying up. Then I get roped into a sales meeting in the US, so I’m going to be away from home for two days, which will no doubt mess up my body clock nicely.

And at home? Well, the hard drive finally broke so I had to rebuild the PC, which was actually quite painless — thanks Ubuntu! Then the kids managed to break our bed this week by jumping on it too enthusiastically, meaning the mattress is on the floor until the replacement arrives next Tuesday, when, of course, I’m in the US and unable to put it together for Louise.

So, I may be losing the war at the moment but there’s one battle I can win: With some help from the Google Reader Widget for WordPress I’ve added the contents of my news feed to the right-hand side of the blog. Sweet. Hope you find the links interesting.

Also making an attempt for the most categories for a single post here.

Google Reader

Monday, May 14th, 2007

A quick pointer: If you read blogs and news sites, which is pretty much a tautology given that you’re reading this, you should take a look at Google Reader. It’s a website that lets you subscribe to your favourite blogs and news sites and puts all the posts in one place — like email for the web.

Google Reader has a few nice features. Firstly, it can order posts such that more “important” posts, i.e. those from less frequently updated sites, are shown before those from more prolific sites. You can also share posts, creating your own news stream, which other people can subscribe to and so on ad infinitum.

When the rain starts to fall

Tim, you’re absolutely right and you don’t need to live in a foreign country to feel “the drift”. Moving out of the area or having children seems sufficient to reduce contact with your friends tenfold. It’s this feeling that made me start blogging and I suspect it’s the same with you.

When we met up at the pub I felt exactly as you described. Half the people there I hadn’t seen in 2007 but the instant rapport left me feeling almost elated. Or perhaps that was all the beer I was drinking. Anyway… whatever… good times!

I can’t believe it’s been four years since your wedding! In a blog-worthy tribute (and to follow up my previous post about photo sharing) I bring you a dozen photos of the day in question. Congratulations!

Photo sharing

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

Tim W was over from Dubai recently and he asked me the best way to upload photos to his blog. My answer was “don’t put the photos on the blog, use a photo sharing site instead”. In particular I would suggest Picasa Web Albums from Google. You could use another sharing site like Flickr but I’d recommend PWA on the basis that you might already have a Google account (so that’s one less login to remember) and it easy to edit and upload your photos in bulk with the free Picasa photo management application.

So, there you go Tim, let’s see what you’ve got! Louise and I will be joining you as soon as I’ve upgraded our PC to the latest version of Ubuntu.

Ten to the five

Yes, I disappeared down the Bloggers’ Black Hole. On returning from the BBH it is customary to come up with some excuses, so I’ll put the blame fairly on the New Job. Just too many new factlets to absorb has left me without enough whatever-it-is to write here. Also, having been away from the family for a straight ten days I’ve been playing catch up on all things familial, not least of which the DIY; the kitchen tiling is done so the to-do list there is starting to looking encouragingly short.

So what pushed me over the activation energy hump and restarted this blogging reaction? While driving home this evening I glanced down at the dash and there sat the figures 100000. You see, I know it’s just an entirely arbitrary number but I was very pleased not to miss the occasion, especially as I’d not been waiting for it (as I have with previous cars I’ve owned).

Not the most earth shattering news I’ll grant you but it’s got me started again.

Well blow me over, Mr Watkins has only taken the hint and got himself a blog! I’m slightly ashamed to admit that I was actually rather excited when I found out. Given his relative remoteness, I look forward to being able to keep in touch a bit better. And as he says, email seems so…. last year.

After I had been blogging for a while, I started to worry that when I met people who read the blog (yes, all two of them) there would be less for us to talk about; they would already know exactly what I was doing and thinking. As it turned out, blogs are the just the edited, sanitized, self-promotional highlights of your life, so you end up having more to talk about as the blog acts as a conversation starter. Sweet.

Blogroll++

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

I’ve just noticed that the delightful Mr Moore has added a link on his blog pointing in this direction, so I should probably reciprocate. At least Tim won’t look quite so lonely in my somewhat sparse blogroll.

I know Pete from the FFL days and (strangely enough) will be seeing him on Saturday, when we and the other FFL survivors meet up at the Woking Beer Festival. Despite the immeasurably small chance of success, I’ll mention it here that I have a spare ticket (and I know of others that are available) so let me know if you want to come along!

Oh, and Pete, I think you are a real blogger. You crossed that line when you started blogging about blogging.

nice -n 20 blogging

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

The strange thing about blogging is that the more busy and interesting your life gets and the more you have topics to blog on, the less time you have for blogging. Well, that’s my rather obvious excuse.

So what have I been so busy doing, exactly? Let’s think… I was going to write about the brewery tour at the Rebellion Brewery I went on with Mark but I can’t remember that much about it. Funny.

And then the DIY season started; it seems to be that October and November are when the weather turns and we find time to do all the home improvements we’ve been planning for the last nine months. We’re now about 80% complete on the laminate flooring project and next comes the whole kitchen re-fit. I’m planning to take a couple of days off. Expect another long break in the blogging while that’s on.

Oh! And the music! I’ve been listening to Supernature by Goldfrapp and The Garden by Zero 7. Both third albums and both really good; far better that I was expecting. Good in the wake up humming the tunes and have them featuring in your dreams kind of way. Perhaps more on that later.

Welcome to the Blogosphere, Tim!

Wednesday, July 5th, 2006

So after much nagging Tim has finally got his arse in gear and joined the Blogosphere — yay!

This means that one of my goals for 2006 is complete. Given that we’re approximately half way through the year it’s probably time for a quick review of progress. Close FFL: Done. Finish decorating lounge: Pending a trip to Ikea. Decorate another room: Planning changes to the kitchen. House paintwork: Pending replacement of some window panes. Tame garden: Done. Fix rust on car: Not done. Blog more: Done, I think. Invent TBMMPORPGITWE: I think I’m going to pass on this. Teach Ben to throw and catch: Slow progress. Improve carbon neutrality: Done some basic research. Run more: Failing miserably.
