Is Twitter killing this blog?

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

A couple of weeks ago I sat down to write a post called “Is Twitter killing this blog?” but in the process managed to hose the whole blog while doing an upgrade of the software. I needed back-end access to the server to fix something that went wrong during the upgrade only to find out that there was something wrong with the account such that I was locked out. Thankfully, it didn’t take too long for the nice folks at PlusNet to sort things out and I was able to get the blog back up and running.

However, it took me a couple more weeks to get round to writing this post, so… Is Twitter killing this blog? Well, perhaps not killing it but certainly slowing it down. I can certainly vent minor, trivial thoughts to Twitter, which I might have previously spun into a post here. Also, now that there’s a small band of friends on Twitter, I’m enjoying the banter there… far more feedback there already than here.

In addition, life is fairly settled currently, so there doesn’t seem to be much to write about. And then there’s Ben’s DS. I think I’m catching up for several years of missed computer games. I’m at 97% on Lego Star Wars Saga. I think if I can grind my way to 100% I’ll have definitely maxed out and be able to leave it alone for a while.

Four years of blogging

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

A couple of days ago marked the fourth anniversary of this blog but I’ve been too busy in the evenings (doing irresponsible things like watching Slumdog Millionaire) to do anything about it. I don’t have a whole lot of analysis or navel gazing to provide on the topic, other to say that I can easily see myself continuing for another four years at the rate of a few posts a month. It doesn’t feel like a long time at all.

I was all set to upload a fresh new theme for the blog to give it a facelift but my ISP has seen fit to lock me out of my server-side access. I guess that will necessitate an acceleration of my plans to move to a new ISP. Any recommendations for web hosting providers very welcome.

Tweet on!

So, I’ve been wondering about Twitter and was going to wait until the fourth anniversary of this blog to sign up in some bizarre attempt to mark the occasion… and then Louise’s friend invites her to sign up and there was no way that I was going to let Louise beat me to the punch on that one, so we sat there and signed up together.

So — and incidentally I don’t think I’ve started enough clauses in this post with the word “so” so far — now you can follow me and also Louise in (potentially) tedious detail. Actually, the more I think about it the more I like the concept of micro-blogging. There are so many small, ephemeral thoughts I’d like to inflict on share with friends and family that never get as far as this blog.

Now my only issues are whether I should actually be publishing on indenti.ca and what picture to use on my profile.

Twit too?

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Writing a blog post, even a short one like this, is a time consuming process for me. This is mainly due to my obsessive-compulsive disorder, which requires I re-read everything I write three times over to check for mistaeks.

Because of this, there has been many a short thought that has never made it onto this fine blog. And it’s for this reason that I’m considering joining Twitter. It kind of feels like Facebook status updates without all the other bullshit.

I’m a bit behind the times on this one but that’s not the point. Anyone else out there tried it?

Postponemental

So I didn’t go for a run this morning and I’ve not uploaded any photos for your delectation. The former was due to a disturbed night’s sleep. The latter is due to a surprising number of acceptable photos that I want to tweak a bit first. Stay tuned.

(Seven posts in seven days — mission accomplished, yay!)

I’m back, baby!

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Hopefully you’ll have noticed a decided up-swing in my posts here. To get back in the saddle, I’ve decided to post every day for a week. So far so good but today we’re off to James and Ruth’s wedding, which leaves me with very little time. Consequently you’ll have to make do with this meta-post.

Or perhaps not. As a sweetner, here’s a tip on how to perfectly mitre skirting boards at a corner, no matter the angle.

Footprints in the sand

I’m very  glad to see that Mr Watkins is back. With Mr Moore rationing his output I was beginning to feel very lonely. Come back my wayward blogging buddies, all is forgiven!

On the BitTorrent front, I’m very interested to find out about Mininova from Tim. I’ve been using The Pirate Bay so far but the lack of dodgy adverts at Mininova is appealing. Since iPlayer came out at the top of the year we’ve started using it frequently. Having become accustomed to watching programmes on our laptop, I want to be able to access all TV programmes this way. Downloading them with BitTorrent works very well, especially because we get free overnight bandwidth from the nice folks at PlusNet. But that endorsement can wait for another post.

One tip I’d pass on to Mac and Linux (and *nix) users would be to use Transmission. It takes all the insanity out of BitTorrent downloads and just works.

The magic number

Three years of blogging. It really doesn’t seem that long. Sometimes I blog more, sometimes less, but I don’t see myself stopping any time soon. Hopefully that’s good news, from your perspective…

This is Halloween

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Whilst looking for a recipe for pumpkin soup, I came across this website. Understandably it is the first hit on Google, but what made me smile was that it appears the site originally was not a lot to do with pumpkin soup at all, but after frequent visitors looking for soup recipes, there are now some on there. How cool is that?

It also made me chuckle that that the busiest time of year for site traffic is around Halloween, and with people looking for recipes. I hate being predictable.

Thank crunchy for blogging

I don’t know why it is but when people blog they can speak with more honesty and do so more directly than they ever would in an email, phone call or even face to face. And that’s why I love it.
