A blinking cursor

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

James and Ruth’s wedding yesterday was superb. The best day in August, beautiful Oxfordshire countryside and a chance to catch up with lots of people I haven’t see in ages. I took enough pictures to flatten the battery on my camera and some of them even looked okay. I’m going to upload the best to Flickr — I’ve used Picasa Web in the past but I feel I shouldn’t put all my eggs in a Google shaped basket, so this is a good reason to try something new.

I was going to upload the said pictures tonight but after staying up until 1.30am — and amazingly avoiding a hangover this morning — I’m just too wiped out; vegging out in front of a repeat of Top Gear is about all I can be bothered with. That 6am run tomorrow morning is looking mightily uninviting right now. And so to bed…

I’m back, baby!

Hopefully you’ll have noticed a decided up-swing in my posts here. To get back in the saddle, I’ve decided to post every day for a week. So far so good but today we’re off to James and Ruth’s wedding, which leaves me with very little time. Consequently you’ll have to make do with this meta-post.

Or perhaps not. As a sweetner, here’s a tip on how to perfectly mitre skirting boards at a corner, no matter the angle.

A failed experiment

One of the upsides of parenting is chocolate milk. Before we had kids, chocolate milk was just not something I did. Now it’s a weekly event and it’s great!

So, today I decided to conduct an experiment and made a cup of tea using chocolate milk. This seemed like a perfectly reasonable combination. You know, tea’s good, chocolate’s good and more importantly some chocolate with a cup of tea is good, so… chocolate in tea must be good, no?

I think we can write this one off as a failure. Planned experiments with strawberry and banana milk have been cancelled at this time.

Addiction

A couple of weeks back I was looking through the plethora of free games available for Ubuntu, trying to find something casual for Louise to play. I stumbled across Gweled, a free clone of Bejeweled. This is a simple game, about as difficult as Tetris to play and with similar levels of addictability. Louise and I are both hooked.

Gweled comes with a rather cool Daft Punk-esque sound track that seems to will you on towards higher scores. It’s just not the same game with the sound turned off. This evening, as I got back from badminton (having put in a solid 20 minutes of Gweled before I left) I heard the familiar bass line coming from the dining room. “Yes, I’m playing.” came the admission. There’s no need to qualify the statement any more, we’re that far gone.

Send In The Clones

Mark switched me on to Mark Kermode’s film reviews on Simon Mayo’s radio show some time back. Most wittertaining it is too. From here I found Mark Kermode’s uncut video blog. Why mention this now? Well, may I present to you Revue: Star Wars, The Clone Wars. I’ve heard a clip of the dialogue in this film and it makes the Phantom Menace sound like Shakespear.

The loneliness of the early morning runner

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Hello my forward-in-time-reading friends, long time no see!

It’s strange the small things that signal the changes in the seasons. It can be a sound or a smell but as I got up this morning for my run, it was all in the light… or lack of it. The street lights were still on as I stepped out and there was an autumnal chill in the air.

I’m not sure if my running will sustain a downturn in the the weather. That said, I’ve found myself out in the rain on more than one occasion.

So, it looks like it’s back to getting my clothes ready the night before so I can get dressed in the dark and not wake the rest of the family up in the process.

And now my backward-in-time-reading friends, there will be an extending gap before my next post…

Daddy’s getting old….

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

On Monday Andrew had the day off work (it was our wedding anniversary, 7 years!) and we all went out for lunch. Sitting in the restaurant was obviously very tiring, because Jessica had to have a little lie down. From her position on the seat opposite Andrew she commented “The light on your hair makes it look mmmppphhhh”.

Andrew : “Makes it look what? Makes it look red ?”

Jessica : “No Daddy. Makes it look grey .”
