So. I’ve finally gone and joined all the [cool kids](http://wilwheaton.net/ “Wil Wheaton Dot Net”) on the intarweb and got myself a weblog.
Why? Well, I used to enjoy talking to my friends down the pub over a pint. But as time passed, many of them moved away — I doubt James and Vicky will be making the Reading to Sydney trip for a swift half — and now that I have a young family of my own, I don’t get many evenings off.
It’s a cliche, but I really didn’t realise how much I missed it until it was gone. The infrequent times we do meet up seem to pass in a blur and there’s so much left unsaid, on my part at least.
This weblog is my solution — it might even work! Emailing just doesn’t seem right any more, and my growing sense of pompous self-importance demands that I stake my claim in the blogosphere. And of course, you will be hanging on my every word here. Or something.
The plan has been circulating in my head for about the past six months. The catalyst for actually doing something about it was my wife, Louise, giving birth to our second child, Jessica. So, rather than the pub-talk topics I originally intended, expect lots of pictures of Jessica and her brother Ben. At least for the time being. If you’re not interested, don’t read. I’m not the boss of you!

I’m worried about you. First a blog but what next? An iPod? A Go-ped? A 3G phone? It’s a slippery slope Mr S.
Oh, and I’ve been meaning to ask – is there any story behind the kids’ names? Just hoping you’re going to admit Jessica is in honour of the wonderful Spaced…
Mr E.
Apple *nearly* struck a fatal blow to me with their MiniMac, but I’ve resisted the whole iLife thing so far.
Neither Ben nor Jessica are named after anyone specific, although I’ve always thought Jessica was a beautiful name since watching Dune. The Spaced link does please me greatly, though! If Jessica had been a boy, we were considering James Matthew, making her initials JMS. Only the sad amoung your will appreciate the link there.
The nearest alternative names we rejected were Noah for Ben and Freya for Jessica. They’re fairly distinctive, which is useful if your last name is as common as Smith, but in both cases they just didn’t seem appropriate once we’d met them for the first time.
3G Phone? iLife stuff? That’s nothing… try living with a Microsoft employee. Next up – MS smartphone so I can use outlook on the train (*wince*)…
Glad everyone in the expanding Smith household is doing fine and here’s to sleep returning to your life in the not too distant future!
Hmmm. Using Outlook on the train — that sounds like such fun!
Andrew, this blog is great, but the navigation around the various sub-blogs is a bit, er, sequential. Is there a quick way to jump to a specific sub-blog that I haven’t spotted?
Thanks! If you go to the main blog page (by clicking on the “Sleep Interrupted” title) there are links to each of the categories on the right-hand side.
Perfect! Thanks chap.
